Dr. Kim Sogge (van Walsum), C.Psych., Ph.D. (Texas A&M), M.Ed. (McGill) is a psychologist with a special interest in the intersection of the mind and the body.  She has cultivated these interests through training in clinical health psychology and continuing education in sport and performance psychology.  Beginning in July 2010 she will offer clinical health & performance psychology services to a very select number of performance oriented individuals at her office in downtown Ottawa.*

A psychologist at the Royal Ottawa Hospital (as of July 2010), Dr. Sogge (van Walsum) has held positions in the Musculoskeletal Clinic at the New Alberta Children's Hospital, as faculty in Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the Texas A&M College of Medicine, and as a Program Director in Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health in New England. Her doctoral residency was in the cutting edge Primary Care/Behavioral Health track at the University of Texas at Austin's University Health Center in Austin, Texas. She has maintained a limited private practice since 2007, and is an adjunct faculty member in the Psychology Department at Trent University as well as an instructor at the University of Lethbridge and University of Calgary.

Assessment

Dr. Sogge offers confidential psychological assessments & performance-oriented mental skills assessments to determine psychological strengths & needs for optimizing:

  • sport performance
  • academic performance
  • professional performance
  • stress management
  • health & body image

Dr. Sogge's psychological assessments and performance-oriented mental skills assessments include a private interview, formal standardized testing, and a follow up feedback session with recommendations for cognitive, affective and behavioral strategies that will build on your strengths and assist in overcoming barriers to optimal performance.

The difference between Dr. Sogge's comprehensive psychological assessments and her performance-oriented mental skills assessments is level of analysis.  Dr. Sogge's comprehensive psychological assessments include an in depth professional assessment of personal history, present life factors, and personality variables, with a formulation of how these factors interact to produce present performance strengths & challenges. If necessary specific psychological assessments for cognitive, attentional, and mood problems will be included. By contrast, Dr. Sogge's performance-oriented mental skills assessments are present focused, and provide a snapshot of how the athlete or performer uses specific performance related psychological skills at the time of assessment.

Intervention

Dr. Sogge offers confidential individual psychological consultations and mindfulness & acceptance based psychotherapy to a select group of performance-oriented clients. Beginning in July 2010 Dr. Sogge's private practice services will be highly limited and will be focused primarily on athletes, aspiring athletes, and performance-oriented individuals who are interested in removing personal & psychological barriers to their optimal performance goals.

Consultation & Training

Dr. Sogge offers supervision, consultation, and training services to professionals and community organizations wishing to go to the next level in mindful leadership, positive psychology, psychological skills development, mindfulness and acceptance based therapy, mindfulness based cognitive therapy, and mindfulness based stress reduction.

Dr. Sogge offers Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction classes (8 week classes, intensives & webinars) annually. The next MBSR intensive will be in 2011 in Ottawa. Watch www.enlightenedathlete.com in the next months for more information.

Dr. Sogge uses dialogue, creativity, and experiential learning as the cornerstones of her training groups. She is available to speak and offer workshops to teams, community groups, schools and health care organizations on her areas of clinical expertise, mindfulness based interventions, and the applications of clinical health psychology to performance enhancement.

As of July 2010 Dr. Sogge's fees are $200 CAD per 50 minute session for psychotherapy; $100 CAD per 80 minute session for group psychotherapy; $ 240 CAD per hour for assessment and other consultation.

All private psychological services including psychotherapy, psychological consultation, and psychological assessments are conducted with client confidentiality and privacy as a very high priority.  Psychologists in Ontario conduct professional services according to a rigourous set of standards designed by the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
